Directions
From Johnstown:
Take Route 56 west to Windber. At the light at the intersection of 56 and 160 in Windber (McDonald's is on your left), make a right on 160 south. Stay on 160 south (it makes a hard left at Pomroy's Corners) and go into Central City (9.5 miles). At the first stop sign in Central City (First Commonwealth Bank on your right), go straight through the stop sign .4 miles until the road dead ends into Shaffer Mountain Road. Make a left on Shaffer Mountain Road and go.8 miles to Lambert Mountain Road. Make a right on Lambert Mountain Road and go 3.3 miles through state game land 228, across Fleegle Road and past Daley Cemetery to the entrance road for the Hawk Watch, which will be a blue gate on the right side of the road. About 200 yards past the gate is a parking lot for the Hawk Watch.
From Harrisburg and the east:
Take the PA Turnpike west to Bedford exit. Get on Route 30 east, just east of Bedford and travel to Schellsburg. At the light in Schellsburg go straight on Route 30 east another 5.3 miles and make a right on Helixville Road at the Kinzey Monument sign. Travel 2.4 miles on Helixville Road to Lambert Mountain Road, which will be to your left. This is a steep mountain dirt road. Go .7 miles on Lambert Mountain Road to the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain, look to your left for a blue gate. This is the entrance to the Hawk Watch. Go back approximately 200 yards to the parking area. Park and enjoy!
From Pittsburgh and the west:
Take the PA Turnpike going east. Get off at the Somerset exit. At the Somerset exit, go to Route 219 north to Stoystown/Jennerstown exit (Route 30). This is about eight miles. Take Route 30 east about 15 miles to Reels Corner (Route 160). Turn left (north on Route 160). Continue on Route 160 north about five miles till you come to the first stop sign in Central City. At this stop sign, 160 will bear to your left. Go straight through the stop sign. This will be Shaffer Mountain Road. Go approximately 1.5 miles or until you get to Lambert Mountain Road on your right. Make a right on Lambert Mountain Road and travel 3.3 miles, through state game land 228, across Fleegle Road and past Daley Cemetery. The entrance to the Hawk Watch will be through a blue gate on your right. About 200 yards past the gate is a parking area. Park and enjoy!
