Problems with the Shaffer Mountain Wind Project?

There is little question that the area Gamesa has chosen for construction of this industrial wind plant is the wrong area. Most of the mountain is undeveloped and roadless exceptional habitat. The area is laced with Exceptional Value (EV) mountain streams, upland wetlands, vernal ponds and bogs that are home to threatened plants and animals. Upland wetlands are unique and very rare and are home to many rare plants such as pitcher plant and bladderwort. Shaffer Mountain is one of the main migration routes in the Eastern U.S. of the threatened Eastern Golden Eagle (only 1500 remaining) and endangered Bald Eagle along with many other hawks and birds of prey. Every Fall thousands of raptors ride the thermals along the Shaffer Mountain face south to better weather. Every Spring these birds catch a ride back north. The endangered Indiana bat also lives in the area. A known hibernation site is located south of the project.

Please review the Informational Pamphlet and Trout Unlimited position statement for great overviews of the problems with this project.
